Blended learning is a training approach that blends face-to-face teaching with technology and online learning. In literally hundreds of studies, it has proven to be far more effective than traditional classroom training, and its use in schools and universities has accelerated since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Is this the perfect business model?
Here's how it works.
You set up a platform that provides the tools that makers need to create online. You provide these tools for free. Then you allow these makers to offer the fruits of their labour to users for free. This brings in millions of monthly active users.
How do you make money from this? By enabling users to make virtual purchases using virtual currency they have to pay for with real money. You and the makers both make money from these purchases, so it's a win-win concept.
There are other companies using a business model like this, but the one I'm thinking of is Roblox, the online game platform. If you're over 20, you may not have heard of Roblox. But if you're under 20, you're more than likely one of the 150 million active monthly users who spend an average of two and a half hours per day on Roblox.
Roblox was one of the tech businesses which benefitted from the pandemic, when schools were closed and kids were stuck at home. The company's annual revenue had already soared from $46 million in 2017 to $435 million in 2019, so who knows what it will be for 2020. Roblox has already announced that they expect to pay out a cool $250 million to makers this year.

How is your Business Model shaping up in these troubled and fast-changing times?
I'm Robin La Pere, no ordinary business consultant. Although I gave up gaming when my children became adults, I have always had a strong interest in new ideas and innovative business models. That's why the Roblox business model described at left intrigues me.
The future of business will undoubtedly be in platforms like Roblox, Amazon, YouTube and so on which make money by allowing others to make money using the tools and distribution mechanisms of the platform.
This is also a principle behind non-tech business models such as multilevel marketing and franchising. But these models can no longer afford to ignore the tech business models which are challenging them while also offering substantial opportunities to expand and diversify.
As a business scaling and franchise consultant, I work with businesses across a range of industries to combine the best of non-tech business models with the best of tech business models. The marriage is not always an easy one but non-tech businesses spurn the synergies offered by technology at their peril.

Why the hell are these companies going public at a time like this?
With the pandemic still in full swing, the timing may seem terrible – but Airbnb’s, DoorDash’s, Roblox’s, and Wish’s public offerings announcements are perfectly timed.
After filing its IPO, Airbnb revealed in a prospectus this week that although the ongoing global pandemic has dramatically impacted its earnings, its bookings have rebounded to roughly 70–80% of what they were in 2019 before Covid-19. This is in complete contrast to the Marriott and Hilton hotel chains which are still operating at only 35–40% of last year’s revenues.
How has Airbnb achieved this seeming miracle? By taking advantage of the switch from international to domestic travel and holidays and shifting Airbnb’s business model to focus on getaways within driving distance of people’s homes. Genius.
The timing is also good because China has relaxed many of its internal travel restrictions – who knew that the American company has cracked the Chinese market where Google, Facebook, eBay et al have failed? – and the December IPO may well coincide with the first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine hitting the market in other parts of the world.
The IPO could value Airbnb at more than $30 billion.
DoorDash, Roblox, and Wish all announced plans to go public before the end of the year and their motivation is more obvious than Airbnb’s was initially – it’s safe to say that 2020 hasn’t sucked for home delivery, gaming and e-commerce business models. In fact, there's a chance their fortunes could decline some way when the world returns to normal.
